Going to SchoolâNew Opportunities
A critical difference between unmarried women and their mothers of the immigrant generation lies in formal education: in Yemen, Jewish women were illiterate and most of the immigrants in Israel received at most a few years of formal education; for daughters born in Israel education is compulsory up to the ninth grade.6 Mothers, as we have seen, came to value the formal education of women, desiring that their daughters, as well as their sons, should be well-educated and able to compete for prestigious jobs. Hence, daughters are sent to school for as long as their parents or scholarships can pay the tuition fees, whether this means grades 10â12 or university education. Of the women in this study, all but three completed high school, and half were enrolled in or had completed university courses.
Attending school not only has implications for future employment; values and expectations learned in school are similar to or different from those held to obtain in the home.7 Important considerations are whether girls attend religious or secular schools, their involvement in extracurricular activitiesâparticularly youth movementsâthe extent to which they have made friends from different cultural backgrounds, and their perceptions of their teachersâ attitudes towards them as Yemenis. Just as we have looked at the effects of the status that immigrant men and women have in the wider society, and the effects of their societal position on their domestic authority and power, so we must learn about childrenâs status in the household and community (that is, the school, army, and workplace) in order to understand the context of parent-child relationships.
